Is Chipotle Paleo? Every Ingredient Checked, and How to Order a Paleo Bowl (With Macros)

By Paleo Life Coach Editorial Team · Last updated October 17, 2026 · Checked against Chipotle’s published ingredient and nutrition pages

You’re out, you’re hungry, and the closest option is a Chipotle. Is Chipotle paleo enough to work? Mostly yes, if you build the order yourself. Chipotle publishes every ingredient in every recipe, so you don’t have to guess. This guide grades each item on the menu, explains the one catch that affects almost every protein, and gives four paleo bowl builds with the numbers already added up.

The quick version: Chipotle can be close to paleo. Order a salad or bowl with no rice, beans, cheese, sour cream, corn salsa or vinaigrette, and add meat, fajita veggies, salsa and guacamole. The one catch: Chipotle cooks every meat in high oleic sunflower oil, a seed oil strict paleo avoids.

Is Chipotle paleo friendly?

Chipotle is one of the easier fast-casual chains for paleo, because the food is assembled in front of you and the company lists its ingredients plainly. Its ingredients page says the whole menu is made from 53 ingredients, and lets you see which ones go into each recipe.

Paleo, as Harvard’s Nutrition Source summarizes it, leaves out grains, legumes, dairy, refined sugars and refined vegetable oils such as canola. Held against that list, Chipotle’s menu splits three ways:

  • Strictly paleo as served: guacamole, all three tomato and tomatillo salsas, and the lettuce.
  • Close, with one seed oil: chicken, steak, barbacoa, carnitas and fajita veggies.
  • Not paleo: rice, beans, sofritas, corn salsa, cheese, sour cream, queso, chips, tortillas and the honey vinaigrette.

Because you choose every component, the third group is easy to skip. The second group is where you decide how strict you want to be.

Which Chipotle ingredients are paleo?

We graded each of the 21 recipes on Chipotle’s ingredient page from the ingredients Chipotle lists for it (checked October 7, 2026). “Strict” means every listed ingredient fits standard paleo rules. “Close” means the only issue is the cooking oil.

Two things stand out. First, there’s no added sugar in any meat, salsa or the guacamole. The only sweetener on the whole ingredient list is the honey in the vinaigrette. Second, you won’t find wheat, soy or dairy hiding in the proteins. That’s rarer than you’d think. For comparison, Chick-fil-A’s grilled chicken lists sugar, cane molasses and soybean oil in its marinade, as our Chick-fil-A paleo check shows.

What oil does Chipotle cook with?

Chipotle cooks its meats, fajita veggies, rice and beans in high oleic sunflower oil, and fries its chips in it. The flour tortilla is the only item that lists canola oil. All of this comes straight from Chipotle’s ingredient page.

High oleic sunflower oil is bred to be mostly monounsaturated fat, but it’s still an industrially refined seed oil, and most paleo plans leave those out. How much this matters depends on why you eat paleo:

  • Paleo for general health or weight loss: the oil is a small part of a 4-ounce portion of meat. Chipotle’s chicken has 7 g of fat in total per serving, and some of that is the chicken’s own fat (Chipotle nutrition facts). Most people treat it as an acceptable trade-off for a convenient meal.
  • Strict paleo or an elimination phase: you can’t remove the oil from the meat. A meat-free bowl of lettuce, guacamole and salsas is fully paleo but very low in protein, so packing your own protein is the realistic option.

Our guide to paleo cooking oils explains why seed oils are excluded and which fats paleo cooks use instead.

How do you order a paleo bowl at Chipotle?

Start with a salad or a burrito bowl and say “no rice, no beans” before anything goes in. Then build it in this order:

  1. Base: choose the salad. Chipotle’s salad base is romaine, baby kale and baby spinach (its “supergreens” mix), which adds volume and fiber for 15 calories.
  2. Protein: pick chicken, steak, barbacoa or carnitas. Ask for double if you want a high-protein meal.
  3. Vegetables: add fajita veggies.
  4. Salsa: fresh tomato, tomatillo-green or tomatillo-red. Skip the corn salsa.
  5. Fat: add guacamole.
  6. Skip: cheese, sour cream, queso and the chipotle-honey vinaigrette. Use extra salsa or lime as your dressing.

Here are four builds with totals added up from Chipotle’s own nutrition PDF.

How do you order a paleo bowl at Chipotle?
Bowl build (all on the supergreens salad base) Calories Fat Carbs Fiber Protein Sodium
Chicken, fajita veggies, fresh tomato salsa, guacamole 470 29 g 20 g 10 g 36 g 1,395 mg
Barbacoa, fajita veggies, tomatillo-green salsa, guacamole (the 2019 Paleo Salad Bowl, rebuilt) 450 29 g 22 g 10 g 28 g 1,325 mg
Steak, fajita veggies, tomatillo-red salsa, guacamole 445 28 g 21 g 11 g 25 g 1,365 mg
Double chicken, fajita veggies, tomatillo-green salsa (no guacamole) 410 14 g 12 g 3 g 66 g 1,045 mg

Totals calculated by our editorial team from item values in Chipotle’s U.S. nutrition facts PDF: supergreens 3 oz, meat 4 oz per portion, fajita veggies 2 oz, fresh tomato salsa 4 oz, tomatillo salsas 2 fl oz, guacamole 4 oz. Real portions vary by restaurant.

Worked example: the chicken bowl adds up like this: supergreens (15 cal, 1 g protein) + chicken (180 cal, 32 g protein) + fajita veggies (20 cal, 1 g protein) + fresh tomato salsa (25 cal, 0 g protein) + guacamole (230 cal, 2 g protein) = 470 calories and 36 g protein. If you want to check that against your own targets, our TDEE and macro calculator gives you a daily protein and calorie number to compare it with.

How much sodium is in a paleo Chipotle bowl?

More than most people expect. The four builds above run from 1,045 to 1,395 mg of sodium. The FDA’s Daily Value for sodium is less than 2,300 mg a day, so one bowl uses 45-61% of it. The FDA also says 20% of the Daily Value or more per serving counts as high.

Where the sodium comes from (per portion, from Chipotle’s PDF):

How much sodium is in a paleo Chipotle bowl?
Component Sodium
Fresh tomato salsa (4 oz) 550 mg
Barbacoa (4 oz) 530 mg
Tomatillo-red chili salsa (2 fl oz) 500 mg
Carnitas (4 oz) 450 mg
Guacamole (4 oz) 370 mg
Steak (4 oz) 330 mg
Chicken (4 oz) 310 mg
Tomatillo-green chili salsa (2 fl oz) 260 mg
Fajita veggies (2 oz) 150 mg

Source: Chipotle U.S. nutrition facts.

The easiest cuts: choose chicken or steak over barbacoa, and the tomatillo-green salsa over the fresh tomato salsa. Strict paleo leaves out added salt, as Harvard’s review notes, so a restaurant bowl is one of the saltier meals you’ll eat on paleo. Balance it with unsalted home cooking the rest of the day.

What happened to Chipotle’s Paleo Salad Bowl?

In January 2019, Chipotle launched four “Lifestyle Bowls” for online ordering: a Paleo Salad Bowl, a Keto Salad Bowl, a Whole30 Salad Bowl and a Double Protein Bowl. According to Chipotle’s announcement, the Paleo Salad Bowl was romaine lettuce, barbacoa, fajita veggies, green salsa and guacamole. The Whole30 bowl swapped in carnitas and tomato salsa, and was built with Whole30 co-founder Melissa Hartwig Urban.

You don’t need the preset to get it. Every component is still on the menu, so you can order the same bowl by name, ingredient by ingredient. It’s the second row in the bowl table above. If the app shows a “lifestyle” or diet section in your area, check that the build still matches the ingredients listed here, because menus change.

Is Chipotle Whole30 compliant?

Chipotle’s own press release describes its 2019 Whole30 bowl (carnitas, fajita veggies, tomato salsa, guacamole on romaine) as meeting Whole30 program guidelines. The ingredients in those items haven’t picked up any sugar, grain, legume or dairy since, based on the current ingredient page. The same paleo-style build works for Whole30. Our paleo vs Whole30 comparison explains where the two sets of rules differ.

Common mistakes when ordering paleo at Chipotle

  • Forgetting to say “no rice, no beans” first. The line moves fast. Say it before the server reaches for the rice.
  • Using the vinaigrette as dressing. It’s 220 calories and 850 mg of sodium per 2 fl oz, and its first ingredient is sunflower oil. Use salsa or a lime wedge.
  • Choosing the corn salsa. It looks like a vegetable, but corn is a grain. See is corn paleo.
  • Assuming sofritas is a veggie protein that fits. It’s soy, a legume.
  • Ordering chips “on the side.” They’re corn fried in sunflower oil, and a regular bag is 540 calories.
  • Counting on cross-contact controls. Chipotle’s allergen page notes that foods can come into contact during preparation. If you avoid gluten for medical reasons, ask the server to change gloves, as Chipotle suggests.

Frequently asked questions about Chipotle and paleo

Is Chipotle guacamole paleo?

Yes. Chipotle lists only avocado, cilantro, jalapeño, red onion, lemon juice, lime juice and salt. A 4-ounce portion has 230 calories, 22 g of fat and 6 g of fiber, according to Chipotle’s nutrition PDF. It’s the most paleo-friendly item on the menu and the main source of fat in a paleo bowl.

Is Chipotle chicken paleo?

Close. The chicken is seasoned with chipotle chili, cumin, garlic, oregano, pepper and salt, with no sugar or soy. The only non-paleo ingredient is the high oleic sunflower oil it’s cooked in. A 4-ounce portion gives 180 calories and 32 g of protein, the most protein of any Chipotle meat.

Which Chipotle salsa is paleo?

The fresh tomato salsa, the tomatillo-green chili salsa and the tomatillo-red chili salsa are all made from vegetables, chilies, spices, citrus and salt, so all three are paleo. The roasted chili-corn salsa isn’t, because its main ingredient is sweet corn.

Is Chipotle rice paleo?

No. Both the white and brown cilantro-lime rice are grains, and they’re also cooked with sunflower oil. Rice is one of the most debated foods in paleo circles, and our guide to whether rice is paleo covers that debate. At Chipotle, the simple paleo answer is to leave it out.

Are Chipotle beans paleo?

No. Black and pinto beans are legumes, which standard paleo excludes. Chipotle’s beans are seasoned simply, but they’re still beans. Our page on whether beans are paleo explains the reasoning.

What’s the healthiest paleo order at Chipotle?

For most people, a salad base with chicken, fajita veggies, tomatillo-green salsa and guacamole. By Chipotle’s numbers it comes to 460 calories, 36 g of protein, 9 g of fiber and 1,105 mg of sodium. If you need more protein, double the chicken and halve the guacamole.

Your next step: save your order in the app

Build one of the bowls above in the Chipotle app and save it as a favorite, so you never have to rebuild it at the counter. Keep two versions: a guacamole bowl for a full meal and a double-protein bowl for training days.
